A few years after losing both of my parents, I found myself yearning for something deeper than just another trip. Through my grief, I felt an undeniable pull to visit the country of my birth—Laos—the place where my parents were from, where their stories began. I needed closure, yet at the same time, I longed to feel close to them again. I wanted to walk in their footsteps, to trace the paths they once took, and to uncover the untold stories that time and distance had kept hidden.

I learned that the place where I was born still existed, standing just as it had decades ago. That realization alone was enough to set my journey into motion. My pilgrimage back to Laos was nothing short of profound. I traced my father’s history, visiting the villages he once called home, and pieced together fragments of the life my parents lived before me. I didn’t know a single soul there, so I had to dig deep—asking questions, making connections, and following every breadcrumb that might lead me closer to my family's past. I spoke the language, felt the soil beneath my feet, and immersed myself in a way of life that, in many ways, had shaped who I was before I even realized it.

That journey wasn’t just travel—it was a homecoming. It was one of the most meaningful experience I had ever have. When I returned, I felt whole, as though I had come full circle. If that had been the last journey I ever took, I would have been completely content.
